Two current Southern Sports Academy Lawn Bowls squad members, a former Academy squad member and the Head Coach of the Lawn Bowls Squad, have taken out the prestigious Weston Creek Summer Fours event, held in Canberra from January 24 – 26.
The team comprising current squad members, Daniel Thomas (15 years old) and Bradley Thomas (14 y.o), current Head Coach, David Thomas and 2010 squad member, Thomas Papworth (16 years old) defeated a team that included current Australian representative, Shane Garvey and three other high class adult bowlers from the Sydney region, in taking out the title. A total of 36 teams took part in the three day event, including teams from Darwin, Townsville, Sydney, Brisbane and several Victorian based teams.
A massive prize pool of $12,000 was offered for the event, with the young Academy bowlers and the Head Coach of the program walking away with the first prize purse of $4,000.
The win continues the brilliant form that has been shown by all four bowlers in the past 12 months. David Thomas once again confirmed why he is clearly one of the best bowlers in the region, leading the team throughout the tournament. However, it was the performances of the two young academy bowlers and former Academy squad member that sent shockwaves through the Weston Creek Bowling Club, who let up an almighty cheer when the foursome won the final end.
“There was a lot of tension surrounding the final with the crowd support behind the young bowlers in the team. To defeat the calibre of bowlers that we had on hand for the tournament is an unbelievable effort, something that is unprecedented for the tournament that has been running for 15 years now.
David and the boys deserve the highest praise for their performance. We will be eagerly awaiting their involvement again next year when they return as title-holders to defend their crown.” President of the Weston Creek Bowling Club, Terry McGinnis said.
David, Bradley and Daniel Thomas are members of the Tumut Bowling Club whilst Thomas Papworth is a member of the Holbrook Bowling Club.
The next camp for the Rules Club Lawn Bowls Squad is being held at the Tumut Bowling Club on February 27.
