The recent success of two Southern Sports Academy scholarship holders has been recognised through their respective nominations for the Daily Advertiser Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award.
Shea Byrne, a member of the Town and Country Asphalting Netball Squad, is the April nominee for the Junior Sportsperson Award. Shea was nominated principally on the back of her outstanding performances at the Clubs NSW Academy Games, held in Armidale in early April. Shea was awarded the Games MVP for the Netball Tournament and was instrumental in some of the outstanding wins that the Academy Netball Team put together at the Games. The Southern Sports Academy Netball Team completed the tournament as the top ranked Netball Team in regional NSW, defeating teams from the Central Coast, Hunter region, Illawarra and the North Coast during the course of the Games.
The second nominee for the Award is Cameron Scott of the Flynn Sprake Financial Planning Cycling Squad. Cameron has strung together some outstanding performances during the course of the year, including snaring gold medals at the state Junior Track Championships. However, it was his unbelievable effort in the state hill Climb held at Mount Panorama, Bathurst in May that generated his nomination for the month of May, for the Award. Here, the 13 year old Scott demolished a strong field of cyclists, most of whom were a full year older than Cameron, in one of the toughest hill climbs held in NSW each year. He dominated the race from the start, eventually taking out the Hill Climb title by over 20 seconds to his nearest rival.
The Academy is very proud of both of the athletes and wish them well in their nominations for the Junior Sportsperson Award.
