Young Cyclist Claims Another State Title

Budding young Cycling star and Southern Sports Academy Cycling Squad member, Cameron Scott, has added a third state title to his outstanding list of achievements for the 2011 year with a victory in the U/15 NSW State Hill Climb championships in Bathurst recently. The title completes a treble for Scott, who also won two state titles at the NSW Junior Track Championships in March.

The State Hill Climb title was won after a gruelling sprint of 4.2 km’s up Mount Panorama, in Bathurst. The title was held as part of a week-long state Camp hosted by Cycling NSW, in Bathurst, with the event taking place on Saturday, 9th April.

The circuit, which saw participants scaling the ‘back’ of the same mountain used for the famous car race, was a test of endurance, tactics and ultimately speed with no respite offered over the gruelling distance, uphill.  Cameron easily accounted for the 2nd placegetter in the race with his time of 10 minutes and 42 seconds, a convincing 22 seconds ahead of the next best.

Adding even further merit to an already outstanding effort, the 2nd and 3rd place getters are a full year older than Cameron, who at 13, is a bottom age rider in the U/15 age bracket. He certainly has much to look forward to according to the Academy Head coach, Iain Hume.

“Cameron has always showed immense potential and I am pleased that he is reaping the rewards for all of the hard work he has been putting in at training. The road riders existence can be a solitary one at times, with hundreds of kilometres of training required to get to full fitness, and it is a credit to Cameron that he has stuck at it and reached what was a significant goal of his for the 2011 year.”

The Southern Sports Academy Cycling squad is now preparing for their major road camp of the year, to be held at Harrietville, Victoria in May.
