The Structure
The Southern Sports Academy (formerly Riverina Academy of Sport) was the fifth of nine Regional Academies established across the State of New South Wales.
The Southern Sports Academy was officially opened in July 1992 and since then has successfully provided over 1,000 talented athletes with the expertise to nurture their sporting prowess.
The sports of Softball and Rugby League were chosen as the initial Academy sports, with Soccer being added under the Academy's umbrella in 1993.
Within each sport program a number of athletes are awarded Academy scholarships on an annual basis. These scholarships allow each athlete to participate in the Academy's programs, by giving them access to specialised workshops in sports' specific technique and skill training; Sports Medicine; Sports Psychology; Sports Nutrition and various Personal Development Workshops.
The Academy aims at providing Southern NSW athletes with high level and professional resources not readily at hand, therefore eliminating the high cost of travel to seek these resources.
The Composition
The Academy is controlled by a Board of Directors, who set policy and direction for the organisation. An Executive Director is employed to oversee and administer the Academy's programs and finances. An Office Manager is also employed to manage administrative aspects of the Academy's operation.
The Board of Directors, along with the Executive Director and Office Manager have a broad range of experience and are totally committed to ensuring the best possible assistance is provided to the Academy's athletes.
The Academy constantly reviews the contributions that the organisation and its athletes make to the local community, and has a firm belief that both sporting and citizenship orientated contributions are of a major importance.
